Obesity and Male Infertility

Obesity has risen dramatically over the last twenty years in the westernized world and is thought to be a potential cause for declining sperm counts over a similar period. 17 percent of American men are now considered obese, up 50 percent from just a generation ago. A number of recent studies have revealed a strong connection between high body-mass index (BMI) and low sperm counts; the higher the BMI, the lower the count. Couples in whom the males had a BMI over 30 (clinically considered obese) also had a more difficult time conceiving and higher likelihood of being infertile.
